Claire Bennett

writer
Claire Bennett is an award-winning writer with a National Soap Award, a Royal Television Society Award and a Writers’ Guild of Great Britain Award. With a background in industry before a career in “the industry” she has amassed many skills. She is a Brummie who began her writing career in radio drama and “guerrilla theatre”… writing and producing work in pubs. She is a champion of the region, its stories and voices. She’s comfortable working with diverse groups and successfully advocates for lesser heard voices.
Whilst a core writer on BBC1’s Doctors she pitched, story-led and curated a five-part series of episodes featuring homeless characters. Those characters came from a place of respect. Her final episode of the week, “There is No Place” won her her WGGB Award. The jury said, “The script had a great deal going on in it and Claire Bennett handled all the technical demands with aplomb and skill. The writer respected the audience’s intelligence and it paid dividends. The subject matter was handled with acumen, originality and fearlessness. Quietly subversive, this script shows what it possible…”
She is currently adapting Andy Dale’s novel “Just 14” into a feature length screenplay. Family, friends, teenagers, Birmingham, 18980-81, and football – what’s not to love?
